Thumbz and Logik Dictionary

This is a list of not-entirely-common terms that may be used on this blog, along with notes about usage. This is not authoritative by any means, nor binding. It is simply a reference for unusual or technical terms or unusual usage of common terms. This is a work in progress. It is not complete, nor will it ever be complete. It will probably never be in proper alphabetical order. I will try to add to it as needed; if there is an oversight, please let me know.

AFAB (adj. or noun): Assigned Female At Birth. See: FAAB.

AMAB (adj. or noun): Assigned Male At Birth. See: MAAB.

Backpfeifengesicht (noun): A German compound word often translated as "a face crying out for a fist." They may have a supreme douchbag sneer or be practically sweating smugness. This is almost always coupled with actual douchebaggery. Whatever the reason, they have a backpfeifengesicht and really need to be slapped.

Blending (verb): Successfully being recognized as one's preferred gender. Typically used pre- or early in transition. A synonym for passing. Compare: Presenting

Cisgender (adj.): An agreement between gender and birth sex. Contrast: Transgender.

CRPS, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (noun): An extremely painful neurological disorder characterized by burning pain, hypersensitivity, allodynia (the perception of non-painful sensations as painful), swelling, and atrophy. Your bloghostess has this in both legs; it has been in remission since 2004.

Estradiol (noun): A form of estrogen that can be metabolized orally. Basically just treat this as a synonym for estrogen. Your bloghostess takes this.

FAAB (adj. or noun): Female Assigned At Birth. A person who was born female, or a term to describe such a person. Transmen and ciswomen are FAAB. Contrast: MAAB.

FtM (adj.): Female to male. Refers to a transgender individual who was born biologically female and has chosen to transition to male. Contrast: MtF.

Gender (noun): The psycho-social aspect of the masculine-feminine continuum, including lying somewhere off that continuum. Not all concepts of gender always agree, e.g., psychological and social gender may agree or disagree depending on gender presentation. Compare: Sex.

Gender Dysphoria (noun): A state of distress due to a mismatch between one's biological sex and one's identified or desired gender. This is also the preferred nomenclature in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th edition (DSM-V) for a diagnosis of being transgender.

Gender Identity Disorder (noun): The now discredited diagnosis of being transgender according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 4th edition (DSM-IV). This was replaced with gender dysphoria in the 5th edition, largely because a) it shouldn't be considered a disorder and b) the problem is not the identity but rather the distress caused by a mismatch between identity and physical circumstances.

Genderqueer, Queer (adj.): Not conforming to the masculine-feminine binary. Encompasses androgynous and dual gender identities as well as identities not lying on the typical male-female continuum.

Heteronormative (adj.), Heteronormativity (noun): The background assumption of gender-conforming heterosexuality.

Hormone Therapy, HT, HRT (noun): As used here, refers to hormonal treatments that eliminate testosterone and add estrogen, or vice verse. Commonly referred to as HRT (hormone replacement therapy), though this is, strictly speaking, a misnomer.

Interfrastically (adv.): "Soon" in Albuquerque time, i.e., "I might get around to it at some point, maybe." Usage: "I'll have a follow up post interfrastically."

LGBTQ (adj.): Stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer.

MAAB (adj. or noun): Male Assigned At Birth. A person who was born male, or a term to describe such a person. Transwomen and cismen are MAAB. Contrast: FAAB.

MtF (adj.): Male to female. Refers to a transgender individual who was born biologically male and has chosen to transition to female. Your bloghostess is MtF. Contrast: FtM.

Passing (verb): Successfully being recognized as one's preferred gender. Typically used pre- or early in transition. A synonym for blending. Compare: Presenting

Presenting (verb): Outwardly representing oneself as a particular gender, e.g., presenting as female. When used without a specifier, implicitly means presenting as one's identified gender. Compare: Passing

Propranolol (noun): A drug originally developed to treat high blood pressure that is now widely used for anxiety and fine motor tremor. It is somewhat infamous for doctors prescribing it to themselves for when they give conference presentations and surgeons using it to steady their hands. Your bloghostess takes this as needed for anxiety.

RLE, Real Life Experience (noun): Living as one's preferred gender. Usually used in the context of "full-time RLE," living as one's preferred gender in all social and other interactions.

Sex (noun): The biological aspect of the masculine-feminine continuum. This may be defined in terms of anatomy, hormones, genotype, phenotype (gene expression), karyotype (chromosomes), or other factors. Though these usually agree, there is no necessary agreement between them. Compare: Gender.

Sex Reassignment Surgery, SRS, GRS (noun): The genital reconstruction surgery (GRS, an alternate term) that finalizes gender transition anatomically. Many transfolk choose not to undergo SRS; your humble bloghostess is not among them.

Spironolactone, Spiro (noun): A diuretic often prescribed as an anti-androgenic (anti-testosterone) drug due to its ability to make the kidneys filter out testosterone. Your bloghostess takes this.

Transgender (adj.): Having a disagreement between gender and birth sex. There is no noun form. Contrast: Cisgender.

Transman (noun): A transgender man. That is, an FtM individual.
